[…] The sample sizes, 8 subjects for each review, are too small to show conclusively the significance of the of this disconnect between reviews and scores, but it does demonstrate a problem. It would be interesting to see a larger study with additional publication included, though it difficult to think of anyone who would benefit from funding one. Major publishers like EA almost certainly have a variety of data on similar topics, but we’ll never see them for obvious reasons. Naylor’s study concludes by looking at possible ways to counter this problem, from not using scores at all, as Computer Gaming World is now doing, to simplifying scores towards Ebert and Roper’s gladiatorial judgement system.
